Bernie Barnaby was first involved in Race for Life when asked to design the course for the first St. Albans event in 1998. This course was 2 laps, and due to the increased numbers entering he was ask to designed a 1 lap course for the 2002 event. Also in 2002, for the first time he helped on the day, setting up the course and organising marshals. In 2003 he produced a running web site for Hertfordshire, The site featured a page on the St. Albans Race for Life. After the event he was asked to help at Welwyn and Watford and these were also featured on the site. In 2004 he helped with 9 events in Hertfordshire and the surrounding area. In 2005 he met with Lizzie Cummings to work on the Watford and Enfield races. This led to helping Lizzie with the Blackheath and Regents Park events. Cancer Research UK Race for Life events in London.
